Table Tennis Bats Information in Q&A
table tennis bats? why are all/most table tennis bats red on one side and black on the other? Thanks

firstdowns12 replied: "table tennis bats are red on one side and black on the other because it says they have to be in the rules of the usa table tennis organization. They made this rule because about 20-30 years ago rubber was the same color and some players would use a rubber called anti spin( which gives you a dead ball every time) and nobody could tell which side it was on because it was the same color"

dean replied: "however, if you play with a hard bat (pips out rubber with no sponge rubber) you may have the same colors on both sides, or different colors if you want. BUT the rubber must be identical on both sides of the bat. Can't use yellow or white rubber because it makes it harder to see yellow or white balls when they contact the bat...harder for your opponent, that is. There is a small number of rubbers legal for hardbat competition. Search for the table tennis website, then go to the hardbat site link."

Which makes of table tennis bats are the best? Hi.. I am looking to buy a new table tennis bat, as my game has become quite advanced. Can you please give me suggestions of any table tennis bat makes or specific models which are the best and also good value for money? Thanks..

Wiseguy replied: "If you're serious about playing, you can make your own. Get hig spin rubber, about 10mm on one side and get spotted rubber on the other side. Stiga makes the best rubber. Make sure its ITTF certified by checking theit logo on the rubber."

papamoto22 replied: "its not regulation, but i have made my own paddle that is unbelievable (i think what you call a "bat" i refer to as a "paddle") you probly have heard of this but ill still put it out there in case others who are interested have not.. but its simple.. all you do is take off the foam padding on one of your paddles, more than likely the cheapest one you have, and attach a thick grit piece of sandpaper i should make a short video demonstrating the spin i can get using this paddle.. again, its not regulation, but its a lot of fun to use (and none of my friends know that it is cheating.. i just tell them people use it because its a little bit lighter.. yeah, my friends are foolish) good luck"

J B replied: "try butterfly paddles... they've been around for ages... and i see some of the top notch chinese players using these... but just one thing, being good at table tennis is not about the paddle you use... it's obviously you getting used and more confident with your game... all the best."

Did you know why table tennis bats have two different coloured sides ? it's because one side has antispin and the otheside has a stablising effect but do not ask me which is what all I know one side is red whilst the other is black. A clever player will use his bat accordingly when he has gauged his opponents skill. I mentioned this as someone asked this question earlier today and only one person answered and that was a wrong answer so please forgive me for be to presumptuos

Calvin and Hobbs replied: "I thought that on person holds their bat on the red side and the other on the black side like 2 different teams??"

tykiemykie replied: "I never knew that LOL! You learn something new every day"

G-12 replied: "No.The person who asked the question, answered the question. One side is created for a spin advantage and the other is usually created for hitting with more power."

Benjy replied: "Each side can have a different surface, for example one side might give more spin to the ball than the other."

Steveh replied: "What was the point of asking the question then giving us the answer aswell, I thought the whole idea of this was to ask questions and WAIT for the answer, not give it at the same time!"

Ryan M replied: "One side is specially for spin and the other for speed slight different material."

n_archer21 replied: "yeah its something to do with using the black size to antispin so that your hit does not go in the wrong direction even f you hit it right on target"

david g replied: "Spin and slice, for backhand and forehand. It's very difficult as you have to very quickly change your grip all the time also as you change sides.l can't cope with it so enjoy playing 99% of shots from the backhand only and so have both sides the same. l play a lot of TT and Tennis and badminton, but never get as exhausted as l do playing TT,the speed and concentration is very tiring and you need exceptional fitness.Tennis is a doodle compared to the rigours of the tiny table. My fav game though"

why are table tennis bats different colours on each side? we all know there red on one side and black on the other but why as there seems to be no difference in the thickness of the rubber.

Rawlyn replied: "Why not?"

iecikmci replied: "somebody asked this question before. "

Pavel H replied: "because the black side hits harder and the red side impresses more effect"

belsmellz replied: "Because they have different types of rubber on each side. One side is usually better for adding spin to the ball."

How do i know the specific name or type of a table tennis bat? I've got a table tennis penhold bat made of 300 year old Hinoki wood. It uses the nano composite technology from stiga. Theres this optimum MP written on the bat rubber. It has a carbon rubber. It is a japan penhold bat. Does anybody know the specific name or model for this bat?

elite replied: "try here they may have it listed"

Is it normal to get white marks on a table tennis bat when playing with it? Hi. I just got a new table tennis bat and started playing with it. Everytime I hit the ball (white) it leaves white marks on my bat (especially noticeable on the black side). Is this normal, or is it due to the quality of the balls, or anything else? Thanks for your help..

Ooh, Ooh pick me replied: "It's the balls, you can try wiping then with a little white vinegar and letting them air dry. That should take off the residue on the ball. Also playing with it for a while will work."

what kind of rubber should i use for my table tennis bat? i'm currently using short pimples.i've been playing table tennis for around 6 months.but i'm still not sure what kind of rubber is better.please help.

rats replied: "There are so many rubbers you can choice from, and their prices are vary from $10 to $100+. So the answer is depending on your needs (the offensive or defensive types) and the price that you feel comfortable with. Here are couple online sites you can start looking into. hope it helps you."

AL replied: "It really depends on your style of play. Inverted Pimples (anti-spin, smooth surface): are for undoing spin. Inverted Pimples (Chinese, 'sticky/tacky'): are for adding more spin and control. Short pimples: are for attacks close to the table. Long pimples: are for varied defensive shots. Sticky rubber is my personal preference, as it has control and can give the ball a good spin. It's the best all-rounder too. BUT: it's not for beginner players. However, sticky rubbers are hard to find in common sports stores and tend to be a bit more expensive. So short pimples or anti-spin are fine and are easy to find. Just make sure there's a layer of foam between the rubber and the blade, which makes the bat a LOT better. If/when you are getting good at table tennis, assess your style of play and choose the appropriate rubber. Also, assuming you're a shakehand player, you may want one side sticky and one side short pimples, because backhand shots are usually attacks. Sponge: If you're an attacker, get sponge 1.9mm or thicker. If you're more defensive, use it a bit thin, but never use no sponge. Thicker sponge is faster but has less control, thinner sponge is slower but has more control, and no sponge is useless. Bottom line: Get sticky rubber if you have a intermediate or higher skill level and can find/afford it (any bat with DHS G888 rubber is good), and short pimples or anti-spin for a lower skill level. Stiga 4-star bats for anti-spin and some pimpled rubber, DHS bats for sticky and pimpled. Sometimes bats have 'ratings' for spin, control, and speed, which are nonsense. Consider only the quality of the blade and rubber. Practice well, hope this helped!"

what is the best type of table tennis bat? hey i play table tennis 4 my school but my freind always beats me because his bat gets wayy more spin than mine what is the best type of bat to get thanks? i know its to do with the bat becos wen we swap a beat him bad lol

Montana L replied: "twist your wrist !"

Woah Limahl replied: "Well, living in China..everyone uses Butterfly. So I wouldn't argue with the best in the World. So here's a link to some information on prices etc..good luck, hope you make it to the 2012 or 2016 Olympics! Personally I go for the pistol grip but my father in law is old style! He's a 50 year old Chinese guy, smokes like a chimney, but boy can he play!"

Hawks fail on Tuesday. replied: "Any type of butterfly bat. I have a KayKay bat."

Josh M replied: "It's best to find a rubber that suits your style of play. I've got a very standard £30 bat but it does its job and you should only notice a big difference if you are playing a high level. Saying that, it is important that your rubber does give you a decent amount of spin, but unless your really committed to Table Tennis I wouldn't go spending hundreds!"
